I tried regular yoga many years ago and did not enjoy it. Then I tried hot yoga and fell in love. The heat and sweating combined with the movements felt so good to me. It has been quite a few years since I’ve done hot yoga and my body has gone through several changes with age. Needless to say I was a bit scared when I walked into the Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach studio, but I was instantly made to feel welcomed and at ease. I even began the 30 day challenge and completed it! My body feels amazing. I’ve lost 20lbs in those 30 days, I can stand for long periods of time without my back aching and my flexibility & balance are slowly getting better. I’m hooked for life. The instructors are ALL terrific and have their own styles and my fellow practitioners are friendly. I look forward to class always and highly recommend Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach.

I began my practice with Anita in 2016 when I was visiting my parents in Breezy Point and I was living in Northern California. I really enjoyed her cadence and consistency with her approach to how she takes you through the series. I returned to California and maintained my practice largely due to the great foundation I was able to establish at HYRB. I worked in law enforcement and commuted by bicycle. The hot yoga on my off days was the most beneficial reset I could imagine. It helped me immensely both personally and professionally. Fast forward to 2023 and I returned to Breezy to be with my parents during the last stages of their lives and I am truly grateful for HYRB. Anita is exactly the same as I had remembered and what I needed most to ground me and help me to focus on what my family and I needed at the time. The Studio and my consistent practice definitely helped me to gauge what I need to accomplish throughout my day.

I have just completed 30 classes in 30 days and I feel better both physically and mentally than I have in a long time. For the past few years I have had injuries to my hips and low back that have severely impacted my quality of life. Over the course of the 30 days I have gained more mobility in both areas, and I have also reduced the pain that has limited me. I noticed that I have a lot more energy throughout the day and I am getting more done. Mentally I feel sharper, better able to focus, and more positive, and I am less inclined to dwell on negativity. Anita, all the instructors, and the other yogis were incredibly supportive throughout the 30 days. Their encouragement made it feel like they were on the journey with me. Arriving at class most days people would ask what day I was on and offer some words to motivate me. This really is a supportive, welcoming community and it has been great becoming a part of it. HYRB and Anita have been an incredible gift to me over the last 22 years. Through my first pregnancy, Sandy and the pandemic, this amazing practice has really helped me to “chill out” and take things in stride. Now in my 50’s, my carriage is lifted and I can stretch, bend and turn with greater ease every day. I’m always a nicer person to my family after class. lol. My body and limits have changed over the years but there is something about the extreme temperature and sweat that renews me from the inside out. I can think more clearly and focus more as well. I started taking hot yoga classes as a recovery workout from my regular workouts. I sustained a back injury (anterior herniated bulging disc) and hot yoga was no longer a recovery workout, but part of my recovery. After taking several classes a week for 6 weeks (sometimes i was just in the hot room with minimal movement) I am almost 100% recovered! This miracle yoga practice is not just for staying in shape and losing weight, but also to recover from injuries and gain strength to further reduce the risk of re-injury.

It took me years to walk into a Hot Yoga Studio. Something that always peaked my interest but fear of inflexibility kept me out. It wasn’t until my friend Lisa recommended I try Anita’s studio to help me recover from a torn rotator cuff that I decided it was time. I was looking for a drop off laundry on Beach 116th Street when my eyes wandered up above the laundromat and saw the neon sign for Hot Yoga. Just retired and bored with my gym ‘routine’ I was looking for a new adventure. Hot Yoga was entirely new for me – I’ve never done any kind of yoga before. During the first session, as Anita (the wonderful Yoga-Meister) called out the Sanskrit terms for the different postures in her very Brooklyn accent, my body struggled not too successfully to follow the lead. At first I was a more than a bit self- conscious about not being able to get my body to obey but no one was judging, Anita’s expertise and levity assuring us that we’re all beginners – for years: So don’t sweat it, so to speak.
I’ve been going on a fairly regular basis for the past few months and find myself more balanced and loose in body, mind and spirit and ever so grateful that my eyes happened to wander up from the drop-off laundry that day where the clothes get soaked and spun not unlike the bodies above sweating and twisting in delightful abandon.

HYRB is the best place on Earth! If you’d like to try yoga this is a great place to start. Anita and Rick create an open & fun loving environment for all yogis. Anita takes yoga further than just the postures. She loves to start classes with a reading which states a positive message. Throughout the class everyone jokes with one another while still remaining focused on their poses. This community is full of spirit, encouragement and acceptance. If you’re a beginner, you CAN do the classes and eventually will catch up to more advanced yogis with time and effort. The second I walked into the HYRB studio, I was immediately welcomed with a warmth that I knew felt different from other yoga studios that I have attended throughout the five boroughs. I came to Hot Yoga Rockaway in the fall of 2021 still recovering from an injury the December prior (where a car drove over my right foot while I was running resulting in toe fractures, injury to my lisfranc and tendonitis issues). As a lifelong athlete (including collegiate running), to say I was in a bad mental and physical place is a grave understatement. I had prior 26 + 2 experience from my college days (but it had been years) and upon moving to Rockaway in the spring, I knew that I needed to eventually start moving my body consistently again.
Once I finally got around to going, I took my first class with Anita and was immediately hooked. Anita welcomed me for my first class and truthfully, so did the regulars. The energy of the room that first day (and everyday since) was inviting, non-judgmental and encouraging—completely encompassing the "yoga for every body" and "yoga practice not yoga perfect" mantras you hear from whomever is teaching. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better experience and it was honestly exactly what I needed.
So I’ve been going every morning as long as my schedule allows—always trying my best to rearrange it so I can make the 9 am. It’s such a treat to be a part of this community and I always leave class feeling better and stronger and ready to start the day than I was going into it. And no matter who is teaching, even though it’s the same series of postures each time, I’ve never left class not having learned something new or been inspired in some way.
I’m almost all healed from my injury now and I am back to training for an ultramarathon again. I attribute so much of (if not all) my mental, physical and spiritual progress to this studio and this beautiful familial environment that Anita and the other instructors (they’re all amazing) have created. It’s certainly made me "grateful for what I have and grateful for what I don’t have".
If you have been hesitant about taking a class, I’ve been there. Looking back, the only thing I wish was that I had started going sooner.

Anita, thank you for breathing life back into me. Your class has made such a difference for me. When I came to the studio for the first time, I felt like an out of shape mess not being able to do any of the postures properly. You made me feel welcome anyway. Gradually, and thanks to your instruction I was able to learn and improve a lot. Today, for the first time I was able to enjoy doing every single yoga pose even the ones I used to dread. Your classes are a joy; warm (literal & figurative), inviting, and full of your humor. Laughter always fills the room, guaranteeing comic *and*cosmic relief. At the end of today's class Ricky asked me if I felt better. I said that I did. He then followed with, "you always feel better no matter what issue(s) you come in with". It's the truth. I have been lucky enough to be able to practice yoga every morning with RBHY since COVID19 kept me working from home. With everything going on in the world right now it helps more than ever to have a practice to help steady my emotions, move my body, and get in a positive mindset for the day. After completing the 30-day challenge at Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach, I feel flexible, strong, tuned in and zenned out. I am so grateful to the one and only amazing Anita and her fabulous team of instructors that each bring their own personal style and knowledge to each class: Krystle reminds us that "sometimes you just gotta sweat it out" and Christine advises to "be sweet and gentle with yourself" and quirky Claire, with her themed playlists, long holds, and inviting you to release your spine "bit by bit, and to not do anything to harsh your mellow... " Missy makes sure you get those abs in there - in pretty much every posture, Emily has such a beautiful light energy, while Jeanne steadily explains all the details and does all the demos so you can see what is going on and Anita commands us to "go back, fall back, all the way back... doo da doo da..." making hilarious jingles all the way. Committing to a daily hot yoga practice has helped me make better more loving choices in my life (like going to bed early so I can make it to a morning yoga class) and staying hydrated! I highly recommend all the classes at Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach from Hot 26 (my personal favorite), to Vinyasa, to Iron Yoga and the special relaxing Yin class for a rounded out, week of workouts. When I am having a stressful day, I know that I can just check the hot yoga schedule and head on over to sweat it out, and all will be good again. Hot yoga in Rockaway Beach absolutely ROCKS! It is an honor to get to practice here daily.

Since I have been making it to yoga classes at Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach for the past year or so, I have lost a significant amount of weight and noticed benefits to my overall health and well-being. The Hot 26 classes are so refreshing, in any season... and detoxify my body! I sweat, bend, move and generally feel great. A hot 26 class is the perfect way to start or end any day. Every class is an opportunity to tune in, and readjust. In addition, the Burn classes with Theresa really take it up a notch, from a cardio and weight perspective and the Vinyasa flow with Claire can be gentle or challenging. While dancing at Burning Man this summer, I caught myself being able to bend all the way back to look up, to check out the full stream of green lasers being emitted from the dance stage. I have to thank Anita and her team of amazing yogis for helping me naturally become able to back bend-to this degree. I am grateful for this practice and this studio.

I can't say enough of what Hot Yoga has done for me. Physically, I could hardly walk. I was diagnosed with tears in both knees. I no longer could do my normal workouts but needed to continue to do something. I joined in May and after a few months my knees feel as if nothing was ever wrong with them. I can easily go up and down stairs, I can dance, I can even run (if I wanted to, which I don't). There is no more pain or limitation! Most important, mentally it has been so rewarding. Showing up and completing class, at times, is a huge challenge...I do it anyway and when class is over I know I'm unstoppable! Thank you for all you do and making class fun and entertaining.

Sorry for the ultra braggy post, but I'm really proud! Hot Yoga is great because I'm a 63 year young man with arthritis in all my joints, and knees that are at times painful. When I take 2 or more classes per week, I feel 20-30 years younger! I can run down the flight of stairs after class, jump on my bike and ride till the cows come home. All my joints; shoulders, elbows and knees all feel refurbished & reconditioned, like I just got a lube job. I swear by it and recommend it to anybody and everybody. I've been a regular hot yoga practitioner for almost 17 yrs. and still, when class is over, I can’t wait until the next one.

I have been practicing yoga regularly at Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach for over two years and cannot recommend this practice more enthusiastically. It is the highlight of my day. The teachers and fellow yogis create a warm, welcoming and friendly environment. Sometimes I enter the studio reluctantly, yet always exit feeling better for showing up. On a recent visit I came to class feeling poorly. I was congested all morning and could not stop sneezing. Once in the heat moving through the meditative practice, I felt better. I have done this yoga for two weeks, about 15 times in total and can feel my body getting into balance enabling me to move with more pleasure and less pain. It's not that hard, as the teacher says : 90% of the effort is to come to class. I feel great just being in a hot room as I hate cold weather in general. Body-wise I have tight areas and many misbalances between my right and left side as a result of my intense Soviet tennis practices that never included any stretching! Hot yoga is helping me to rediscover my body. My inspiration is to become a female Bruce Lee! At my last practice I finally got the hang of the opening breathing exercise… Personally I feel that proper breathing is 99% of success in sport and life. Due to tennis, specifically its repetitive movement for forehand and serve, over time, my bottom right rib cage closed itself slightly. I can also feel that my right nostril inhales and exhales with lesser force, my right lung is less efficient compared to the other one. I have the muscles but my mind is not connected to them. Yoga can fix it. Yoga can make any sport fell more effortless and more enjoyable. On top of that, My skin looks great after all the sweating. I only wish I had such a place nearby. Special thank you to all instructors for explaining the MANY benefits of each postures which serves as a great motivator and for their individual corrections. I recently completed my 20th NYC Marathon. For a change of pace I decided to take some classes at Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach in the rest week leading up to the race. I found the movements stretched and relaxed my overtrained muscles, especially hamstrings. After class a feeling of calm eased the pre race anxiety. Felt great on Marathon day and had an excellent race. After a couple of days rest I took three classes the following week. Today will be my fourth hot yoga class taken consecutively and the results have exceeded expectations to a point of surreality. I feel thinner. I feel lighter. I feel brighter. I feel calmer. I feel more grounded. I feel more focused. I sleep and wake with ease. I have almost completely quit smoking in less than a week with zero nicotine replacement despite a variety of past failed attempts. I feel more in touch with my body. I am more sensitive to my body's feelings and sensations; both good and bad. My mind and body are fluidly communicative. I am eating clean, conscious of everything I choose to put in my body. I feel beautiful. Prior to beginning my hot yoga journey, I slept until almost 2pm (I begin work at 4pm) and felt constantly fatigued. Now, I am waking up at 8:15am thankful that the sun is shining and I am on my way to "bliss". Multiple times throughout my day I get yoga highs where I spontaneously feel AMAZING. I'll find myself smiling for no reason at all and yes, I am aware this can come across as looking crazy but I feel too good to care about what I look like. My skin is clearer and has a healthy glow. I was telling a friend about my yoga experiences thus far and in our conversation he advised me not to push myself too hard and to not force myself to go everyday and that it's okay to start slow. He meant well but I explained to him that there is no forcing at all. I am not forcing myself to class, I am anticipating it. I crave the heat to sweat and rid my body of internal and external maladies. I crave Anita's spunky spirit and perfectly timed comic relief as sweat is dribbling into my eyes, ears, nose, mouth and my legs are quivering. I owe it to my body to loosen up and stretch and challenge my capacity (which improves every single class). I owe it to my mind and soul to feel serene and harmonious. Since starting hot yoga a little over a month ago, the body stiffness and lower back pains that I had felt are completely gone. (The back pain actually disappeared after my first class!) Period and PMS cramps seem to be a thing of the past. My body is toner than it's been in a while and to add to that, on four separate occasions, I was told that I look taller.

I never wanted to do hot yoga. I just wanted to stretch my body in a regular, normal-temperature yoga class. I was sure I'd hate hot yoga. I mean, who needs to be hotter when exercising? But after hearing so many raving about hot yoga, I figured I'd give it a try for two weeks. You can't beat that intro price. So here I am, a convert, who looks forward to rolling out her mat and sweating in a hot yoga class at least four times a week.

Two weeks ago my friend Lisa called me in early morning and asked if I wanted to join her at Hot Yoga. She has been going for years and always mentioned that I should try it. For the past 2 years, I have been experiencing chronic pain in my left ankle and was sometimes awaken from sleep with pain in my ankle. I was taking at least 3 advil at a time per day and suffered headaches daily as well. I recently turned 40 and felt at my absolute worst. I gained over 40 pounds, suffered from depression, was always exhausted, had bad skin, very dry hair and aches and pains all over.

In only 2 weeks time practicing Hot Yoga, I have almost no pain in my ankle, aches and pains are gone, depression lifted and feeling more energized each day! I have not reached for the advil bottle since the day I started. I can't believe what I am accomplishing with my body. I am losing weight and my skin and hair are glowing. I am so grateful to my friend Lisa for introducing me to something that I hope to never ever stop doing. Anita, you told me the first day of Hot Yoga would be the best day of my life.......you were right! Thank you!

In Aug. 2013 I was given a gift certificate for hot yoga that I did not use it until Nov 2013. Needless to say I did not want to come. But, I did. I have NO REGRETS now. I had a lot of issues. I had knee surgery over 5 years ago. I had pain every night. I used 3 pillows to prop my knee up to alleviate the pain. Over 3 years ago I had surgery on my Achilles tendon. I had pain in my foot area every day for 3 years. Since attending hot yoga I can honestly say I NO LONGER HAVE PAIN IN MY ACHILLES TENDON or my foot. My knee has greatly improved. Thanks to all the instructors for helping me with my transition. Claire and Jeanne for your demonstrations of the poses; you both are so sweet. Thank you. Anita and Christine, thank you both for your hands on approach and your encouragement that keeps me coming back. All of my progress may not be visual but all of my progress is as a result of attending hot yoga. I am still a work in progress but a happier work in progress. Thank you so much (smile).

I have just completed the Challenge: 30 classes in 30 days, which I haven't done since beginning hot yoga more than 15 years ago! I've been taking classes regularly, but not every day. I have to say that the challenge was life-changing. Somewhere around the 15th day, my body was broken. Somewhere soon after that, my body started to open up. The effect it has had on my attitude and well being is nothing short of phenomenal. If you haven’t tried hot yoga or done the 30 day challenge, I highly recommend it. You will not be the same after it. As if feeling great from 30 days of yoga wasn't enough, my picture was taken and put up on "The Wall of Fame", I got a congratulatory balloon, a certificate, a round of applause from the other students, and as if that still wasn’t enough, I also received 1 week of free yoga! It was an incredibly touching experience and I feel so lucky to have Anita and all of the great teachers that are a part of her warm and comfortable yoga studio.

Living on the Rockaway peninsula this year has been a challenge for many of us. My personal response after losing my home and my job was to sit on the couch wondering what to do next. I had the good fortune to find an offer to take a week-long introduction to hot yoga, something I had heard about and knew that friends had raved about, but had never tried myself. After gasping through the first class, as my inner brain was saying "WHAT???", everyone around me was telling me, "you have to come back tomorrow"......OK, I thought, but then I realized I had just been in contact with my inner brain, which had been out to lunch for a while. So, I got up the next day and the day after that, until what I found was that I was looking forward to getting back into the hot room and connecting with this unbelievably uplifting experience. I was hooked. I signed on for a month of classes and completed the 30 day challenge. And, believe me, it was a challenge. But who was happier than me in that moment when I posed for a photo, soaked to the skin with a goofy smile, knowing that I was now part of a very unique group of folks who got off the couch. My heartfelt thanks for the staff/friends at Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach. I would never have found the confidence to continue without the camaraderie and support they offered.

After practicing only once a week for 6 months, as well as completing a 30 Day Challenge that just ended, my life has been transformed. Longstanding, severe back pain is completely gone. I can wear flat shoes again for the first time in many years. Enduring a lifetime of a chronic respiratory disease, I've gone from taking an inhaler multiple times a day, every day of my life, to now taking it once a week at most. I've dabbled with Yoga for a few years, but was never really able to commit or get into it. Looking for a way to reenter the practice, I thought Hot Yoga might fit the bill. Initially, I really wondered what I was getting myself into, taking challenging positions in a superheated--temperature wise--environment. Each day, I made progress, sometimes small, but it was there; gaining greater flexibility, stamina and discipline. The teachers were supportive, and tasked me to do my best. I think I achieved something substantial and feel empowered having taken this on and made it through. I recommend it to anyone who wants to feel better & centered.

Thank you for convincing me to try Hot Yoga. I'll admit I was petrified that first class but made it through.... that night I slept soundly for 7 hours for the first time in two years. I was still doubtful that one class made this difference, I returned the following night and again slept like a log, I was hooked, and after each class noticed my energy level was better and better, I was more patient, no more anxiety or hot flashes.... I can go on and on but I think you get the message. You've put the color back into what had become a black and white existence. I can't thank you enough. As a lifelong athlete, martial artist and fitness buff, I have had my fair share of fitness related injuries. I had practiced hot yoga on and off since about 1999; mostly off due to lack of a convenient studio. Then, the unthinkable occurred. I suffered a sports injury that resulted in a total knee reconstruction. Devastated due to my inability to work out and slow recovery, I decided to dedicate myself to renewing my hot yoga practice. The results have been astounding. I have regained almost 100% of my mobility and range of motion, and I owe my progress to hot yoga. Today I am pain-free and back to all of my favorite sports, including running!
